A great internet resource is Ancestry.com. They have some free databases as well as some you have to pay for. Just enter the surname you want to know more about, and you will be taken to a results screen that lists every record where that name was found. Again, many of them are free databases, but some require membership.  Depending on the results you see there, you may want to consider membership. They do offer free trials that can be useful too.  

Another great internet resource is Genealogy.com.  Use the link below to search their databases. Among other things, they have a complete listing of every person in the US from the 1900 census!

An interesting site that offers FREE lookups for many databases is Ancestral Findings. They even have a section where you can look up Italians to America. Join their mailing list and receive a daily email telling you what the days FREE databases are. Lots of interesting stuff on this site. 

SteveMorse.org-Mr. Morse has made several websites that help you search national databases in one easy step. 

Search Death, Bride and Groom indexes for  New York City-Great web site with very useful information. 

Vital Records Information-For all the US states and territories, this site can tell you how to get vital records, such as birth, marriage and death records.
