  Joseph R. Aiena of Edison, age 84 Merck Chemical Engineer, Consultant Services for Joseph R. Aiena, 84 of Edison will be at the Gosselin Funeral Home 660 New Dover Road, Edison on Monday, October 3 from 5 PM- 9 PM. A funeral mass will be held at St. Helena’s Church in Edison at 10 AM on Tuesday, October 4. Interment will follow at St Gertrude’s Cemetery in Colonia, NJ. Mr. Aiena died on Saturday, September 24, 2022. He was a chemical engineer with Merck & Co in Rahway for 34 years before retiring. He continued as a consultant for Merck through 2000. At Merck, he was director of operations for the Research Pilot Plant and was involved with manufacturing operations at Merck facilities in California, Pennsylvania, Ireland and Brazil. Prior to joining Merck, Mr Aiena worked for an aerospace company in Van Nuys, California and at the American Cyanamid plant in Bound Brook, NJ. Mr. Aiena was a 1959 graduate of the Polytechnic University in Brooklyn, NY with a B.S. in Chemical Engineering and received his M.S.degree in 1964 from Newark College of Engineering (now NJIT). Born in Brooklyn, NY, he lived in Northridge, CA and Greenbrook, NJ prior to moving to Edison in 1966. Predeceased by his sister Audrey and surviving are his two sons, Joseph P. and Michael J., and two grandchildren, Braden and Tiernan. Also, survived by brothers Frank, Peter and his wife Teresa, Richard and his wife Kimberly and sister Denise Pecora and her husband Paul, several nieces and nephews and especially his loving friend and companion Frances Rivera.
